Happy Pride Month!

It's June and I bet you've been seeing rainbows all over the place. Pride month is a colorful reminder to be more accepting and inclusive to all of the unique traits that make us all so different and special. I was impressed that my local Target had a whole pride section right when you walked in the door. I live in liberal California but I remember not so far back in 2008 when Prop 8 passed eliminating same sex marriage. Thankfully it has since been overturned but that was only eleven years ago. Mainstream society has come along way in recognizing LGBTQ rights but there is still a long way to go.

Pride stands for the positive stance against discrimination and violence towards lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transsexual people.  It promotes their self-affirmation, dignity, equal rights, increases their visibility as a social group, builds community, and celebrates sexual diversity and gender variance. Pride month was designated in June after lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning persons rioted following a 1969 police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar at 43 Christopher Street, in New York City. This riot and subsequent protests and rioting were the watershed moments and the impetus for organizing LGBT pride marches on a much larger public scale. LA's parade started soon after in 1970 and takes place in the city of West Hollywood every year.

Rainbow Glitter Ombre Nails by Angela Lee @mini.nailstudio

You know I love me so nail art and I just love this rainbow ombre glitter mani! It's a lot of look but the pastel ombre makes it more wearable  and the shorter nail length keeps it chic.

Rainbow mascara eye makeup from my Pinterest board: Rainbow Love

This is a surprisingly wearable rainbow eye makeup look. Love that there is nothing else on the eye except a little highlighter in the inner corner, making the lashes the star of the show.

These makeup brushes have received great reviews and this cruelty free, set is only $20! At that price I couldn't resist treating myself!

This is how it always is book by Laurie Frankel on coffee table with peonies

Ok now we have our pride looks sorted, it's time to educate our brains. I just read This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel in our book club, just in time for Pride month. It was loved by everyone in our group and it provoked stimulating, thoughtful discussion. It's a story of how a family of 5 boys responds to and lives with the challenges of their youngest son becoming transgender.  I highly recommend it for anyone interested in gaining a deeper more nuanced understanding and empathy for the difficulties that transgender children and adults face.  An apt description from the book jacket: "This is how a family keeps a secret...and how that secret ends up keeping them. This is how a family lives happily ever after...until happily ever after becomes complicated.  This is how children change...and then change the world."

I love that you’re bringing awareness to Pride month! I didn’t know a lot of the history, so that was helpful in understanding the background. And I’m loving those celebratory nails!
