In Japanese decorative art, the ginkgo’s distinctive fan-shaped leaf has carried symbolism along with its singular beauty: the ginkgo has been a symbol of longevity (the tree can live for a thousand years) and of a more profound endurance (four ginkgos survived the blast at Hiroshima and are still growing today).

Made You Look: A True Story About Fake Art
Made You Look documentary by Barry Avrich is a fascinating dive into the high end art world's most successful forgery scam. It brought down the Knoedler Gallery, the oldest art gallery in New York (165 years!) and involved 80 million dollars worth of fake Rothko, Warhol, Motherwell, Pollack among other heavy hitters. Knoedler art director Ann Freedman, Knoedler's director who bought the paintings, was forced from the gallery in disgrace shortly before they closed their doors in 2011.
Rothko's previously undiscovered work purchased by Knoedler Gallery
There are so many interesting questions raised in this documentary...was Ann Freedman complicit, or was she blinded by greed or just plain naive? In the high end art world, there are only so many artworks to go around, competition is fierce and the desire to find a previously undiscovered masterpiece is incredibly appealing. How were the art experts who authenticated the paintings duped and if they were then how would anyone else be able to verify its authenticity? Who was the artist that was able to master the varied painting styles of these world famous artists and who was Glafira Rosales, the original art dealer who "found" them and sold them to Ann Freedman? I changed my mind many times while watching this film and am still not sure what I believe but it sure does make for a thought provoking viewing!

Trader Joe’s Roasted Garlic & Pesto Pizza with Deep Fried Crust
I'm not a big consumer of fried foods but I am a pizza lover (a childhood nickname was Pizza Queen 😂) so let's just say that my curiosity was piqued when I saw this land in my local TJ's. It's really tasty, and with ingredients like pesto, burrata and fried dough it is a calorie bomb but it's worth it. Balance its excess with a little more physical movement or save for a day when you need a treat. It's an authentic Pizza Fritti (Fried pizza in Italian) straight from Naples, and I like that it has cashew and pine nut pesto and roasted garlic for something a little more unusual than your basic frozen pizza fare. The crust is pillowy and chewy, I'm not a crust person but this I ate every last bite!
My Octopus Teacher on Netflix
So you have your pizza and now you need a movie to go with it. On Fridays we do family movie night, which we have seen so many movies during this pandemic I had to start keeping a journal to record all of the books, movies etc. that I was consuming and then subsequently forgetting. It's been a fun record of our time during this past year and brings back memories of what was going on when we watched or read what. If you are having trouble keeping track of things lately, I highly recommend jotting them down in a book. Nothing fancy or complicated, just a list of what you've done. You'd be surprised how hard it is to remember and it kind of becomes a fun treasure hunt of memories.
So when my husband selected this movie I was like... My Octopus What? Not something I would have normally gravitated towards but it's a truly unique and engaging documentary. It's about a South African filmmaker who returns to his childhood home in the Western Cape in hopes of combating the work/life burnout he was suffering from. He starts free diving in the kelp forests by his home and encounters an octopus that he sees every time he dives. Gradually he builds a relationship with her and tracks her movements from day to day. I had limited knowledge of octopi before this film, through the stunning cinematography it is fascinating to learn more about these intricate creatures. I was stunned by what elaborate camouflage an octopus is capable of creating and the touching friendship that the filmmaker and her establish. A beautiful film that will be enjoyed by all!
The Apology Line Podcast available on Wondery
One thing I have managed to keep up during Covid is walking 10,000 steps, sometimes more a day. It helps with managing stress and anxiety. A friend gifted me a subscription to Wondery for Christmas and I've been enjoying listening to their podcasts as I walk all over town. I tend to gravitate towards true crime, biographies or just a really engaging story. This podcast has all of those elements.
Allan Bridge, a conceptual artist started The Apology Line in 1980, a phone line where one could leave a message apologizing for past misdeeds to society, their loved ones or themselves. The apologies ranged from the mundane
(not helping a stranger) to the disturbing (domestic violence and murder). Bridges viewed the line between good and evil as more of a gray area rather than clearly defined. With the line, callers could confess their sins without fear of reprisal or judgement. Allan had hoped that it would provide a type of catharsis and might ultimately prevent people from further committing crimes or living a life confused with regret and shame. Allan's wife Marissa, also an artist, narrates the podcast and sets the scene of NYC in the 80's and early 90's, gritty, dirty and full of possibility.
The Apology Line ran for 15 years, there were articles written about it at the time and Allan made an interactive art exhibit out of it, where participants could walk into a phone booth in an art gallery and listen to these confessions. There was even an HBO movie with Chris Noth and Lesley Ann Warren but while the phone line took over Allan's life and most of his time, he was never fully able to monetize it enough to really earn a living. He would spend endless hours listening to calls and responding to them and in the process becoming attached to some of the callers. Most notable was Ritchie, a banker by day/serial killer by night. Allan became so obsessed with Ritchie and corresponding with him that it overshadowed his personal relationships, causing strain in his marriage and friendships.
I don't want to give too much away but what I really loved about this podcast was the questions it conjured up in my head. What makes an artist successful? If they are rich or famous or is it the content of their work? Allan was a thoughtful and eloquent artist but a carpenter to pay the bills. When some of the apologies on the line turn out to be made up fantasies, I felt conflicted between being disappointed that they were fake and feeling duped but then realized shouldn't I ultimately rejoice that the terrible things described never happened in real life? If some of the apologies were not real but a figment of the callers imagination, did that make the Apology Line less real? Conversely, maybe by admitting to their basest selves on tape, it provided an outlet for these people so that they didn't actually act out these impulses in real life. Ultimately we can never know, which I guess makes it all the more interesting.
Doubtfire by Pogo
While working from home and on my walks I listen to a lot of music as well. Doubtfire by Pogo has become a new family favorite, with us breaking out into impromptu dance offs. It takes the lyrics from the classic family film Mrs. Doubtfire and puts them to original music. Hearing Robin Williams as Euphegenia Doubtfire invokes 90's nostalgia for me and introduces a whole new generation of fan who wouldn't otherwise be familiar.
To watch the video on Youtube: https://youtu.be/dqSEox9t4Bw
I was saddened by the tragic circumstances of Robin William's death, I still remember exactly where I was when I learned the news. He was such a gifted comedian and actor and will be forever missed but can be enjoyed once again through this infectious pop song. His time on this earth was not long enough, I hope you will enjoy and think of him fondly!

There are some cool things happening this Halloween. This year we will have a blue moon. It's called a blue moon because it's the second full moon of the same month, after the harvest moon that took place Oct 1-3. Full moons on Halloween are rare...only happening every 18 or 19 years. Because this year’s Halloween full moon will rise at 10:49 a.m. — it will be visible to the entire world, rather than just parts of it, for the first time since World War II. You'll have to wait until 2039 for another global full moon!
Janna Conner Clovis Medallion Earrings and jewels, Amazon dress, Flowers from .99 cent store
Last year I was the art docent for my son's class. I taught a lesson on self portraiture and Frida Kahlo which inspired my Halloween costume. Frida suffered from ill health, she had polio as a child and was in a bad bus accident when she was in her late teens. As a result, she had to endure 35 surgeries over her lifetime and was in constant pain but that didn't stop her from pursuing her passion for painting. And all the while she did so fabulously coiffed, manicured and bejeweled. She did it for herself, not for anyone else.
Frida in bed painting
Since Frida hailed from Mexico City, for my husband we choose the James Bond Spectre costume from the opening scene of the Dia de los Muertos parade. He wore a suit that he had and just had to buy the top hat and the face mask. Very easy costume. I find single use items wasteful so am always thrilled to be able to repurpose or reuse items. I was going to buy a costume dress but found this dress on Amazon and it was about the same price and is much better quality fabric since it's a real dress. I get compliments on it every time I wear it. In years past we did a family costume and were Ninja Turtles and Star Wars so was excited to be glamorous for a change!
Our city of South Pasadena goes nuts for Halloween. Diamond street is decorated all month long culminating with people bussing in to see all the houses and walk up the closed street on Halloween night. There's even a movie set decorator that lives on the street and makes the most amazing Halloween spectacle. This photo is his mom handing out the entrance tickets to his haunted house.

Spider web and Jack Skellington cookies from Thyme Cafe in Santa Monica
In terms of Halloween treats I like that these are just basic black and white and don't involve lots of food coloring frosting that stain your teeth. The spider web is easy to make by drawing concentric circles and then dragging a toothpick from the center out to the edges. The Jack Skellington skull is cute too!
Cute decorative cookies don't often taste good but the ones from my friend Maire Byrne's restaurant in Santa Monica Thyme Cafe sure do! If you are on the westside of LA be sure and check them out!

14k Goldfill Rope Mask Chain Necklace
An exaggerated yet flattering silhouette, this 14k goldfill rope chain is lightweight yet makes a memorable statement.
14k Goldfill Rope Mask Chain Necklace
Face Masks that have elastic ear ties are the easiest and quickest on and off mask but if you're like me, when you are out and about and want to take it off you most likely end up shoving it in your pocket or purse. This ends up spreading any potential contaminant all over the inside of your purse and the contents within which is not a great idea because honestly how often do you sanitize the contents of your purse? I know I don't 😳
With a mask chain, if it puts any contaminants on anything it would be the front of your shirt which would then be removed and washed at the end of the day, unlike your purse. Also, if you're like my husband and shoving the mask in your pocket when not in use you can understand why day to day we see so many stray masks on the sidewalk or street, because they fall out while you're walking and don't notice. The mask chain helps to minimize cross contamination and eliminate unnecessary environmental waste.
14k Goldfill Rope Mask Chain Necklace
Gold-filled chain deliver karat gold at a more affordable cost than solid gold. It won't tarnish and can be buffed with a soft cloth if needed. Another use for this large rope chain also can be as a sunglass/eyeglass holder!

With the quarantine lifestyle still going strong, it's more important than ever to celebrate the little things. The change of seasons from summer to fall gives us something to look forward to. Fall foliage, cooler temperatures, cozy sweaters and warm drinks to savor while snuggling up under a favorite blanket. Putting away the bright neons in favor of a moodier color palette. Here are some of the things I'm excited about!
I must be the only person in the world who's not a pumpkin fan. I like carving them but not eating them. At least not in every single iteration. Walking into Trader Joe's it's like a pumpkin exploded all over the store. They now have everything pumpkin from brioche to cream cheese and alcohol. I'm thrilled that this year, Maple has emerged as a new fall flavor profile. I love maple and I"ve really been enjoying the Maple Oat Milk in my morning latte. It's got a warm sweetness that's not overly sugary or cloying.
I"ve been enjoying Oat Milk for my lattés the past year and am excited to have a new flavor to try! It makes that morning coffee experience just a little more special and luxurious.
As we all spend more time at home, I"ve really been enjoying my Nespresso and my Bodum electric milk frother. It's incredibly affordable (under $30) and elevates my morning coffee game. It's great for frothing any kind of milk, although I'm partial to almond and oat. It heats in under a minute and then you have perfectly frothy foam. It's also easy to clean and it's compact and easy to store out of the way when not in use. I bought mine last winter after staying at a friend's who had one and wanted to continue the memory of all the great lattes I had on vacation when I was back home. Another bonus is that you will save a lot of money in the long run, because all those specialty coffee drinks can really add up!
Taye gold hoops by Janna Conner
The organic shape of these hoops is reminiscent of a curved leaf. One of my favorite things about fall is the changing colors of the leaves. We have a Japanese maple tree that has the most beautiful rust and pumpkin colored leaves. Pair these with a chunky turtleneck or a sweater dress for that ultimate fall feeling!
Autumn for me means transitioning away from a bright sunny color palette to a more subdued moody one. Shades of camel, chocolate, caramel, bordeaux and rust look great paired with faded jeans for a more casual look. I love plaid for fall/winter and this version from Billie the Label is festive and pulled together without looking too fussy. The blouson sleeve gives a feminine tailoring to a more typically masculine fabric choice.
I've put my neon bright nail colors away in favor of darker reds, browns and jewel tones. Love the multi color hues in this fall mani, especially the unusual mustard color. I also tend to keep my nails short, as I find them easier to deal with on the computer keyboard. Style tip: The shorter length also keeps the look more refined and professional so you can try more outlandish colors without looking over the top.

I designed these masks as a fun way to get my 8 year old to be more comfortable and excited about wearing a mask. I was fed up with ordering masks with elastic bands that arrived all different sizes and either too big and falling off or too tight and just plain uncomfortable. Hand tie dyed cheerfully unique patterns turn your face mask into the ultimate accessory!
My son Dries helped me come up with the tie dye designs. He came up with this neon rainbow design because he loves bright colors (just like his mother)! His other favorites are the orange mix and the teal masks.
Teal Neon Green Tie Dye Face Mask
I had initially thought that tying the laces on would be tricky and that they might slip down. It's surprisingly easy though. Tie the top one on first and then the bottom to achieve your perfect fit. Additionally you can tie the two straps together on each side to have a bow accent above the ear if you don't like the across the back of the head technique.
Perfect for kids, and adults. And when you are not needing your face covered, you can pull it down and let it rest around your neck like a kerchief. This helps to eliminate losing your mask when you're not wearing it. My husband was always stuffing them in his pocket and worrying about them falling out.
To get you in the mood to wear a mask, enjoy the whimsical embroidery by artist Han Cao. She takes found paper and adds her own decorative accents to old postcards, retro photographs and the like. I just love her imaginative use of color!
Teal and Black Tie Dye Face Mask
Since this mask has four adjustable ties, it can accommodate a large range of face size and shapes comfortably. With elastic ones I had trouble finding ones that would fit my face and my husbands face. I had to find larger ones to accommodate his beard and larger face. This style eliminates that problem, with a one size fits all.
This style is great for summer's warm weather. The cotton is breathable and cooling. I live in Los Angeles where temperatures often soar to the nineties and above in the summer. I've worn this to run, hike and play tennis in and found it comfortable enough to wear for fairly rigorous exercise.
An added bonus, is extra sun protection. My freckles get so dark in the summer, I'm hoping that this summer wearing a mask in addition to sunscreen whenever I'm outdoors will help protect my skin from the sun even more.
Neon Tie Dye Mask
I'm all about neon colors this summer, from my fingernails to my facial coverings. I love the citrusy colors that are upbeat and cheery, giving me carefree vacation vibes everyday.
But maybe you more like my husband and don't like bright colors... I have some darker more subtle variations like this black and white with a marbleized pattern. I have a color palette for every mood!
You can tie it above or below your ponytail. What I like best about this style is that it kind of rests on top of your ears so it doesn't need to be super tight to get good coverage. And since it's not tight, it won't leave annoying marks on your face after you remove it.
I made this one to resemble moving water, I grew up at the beach after all! What's more zen and calming than water? Whether it's a pool, ocean or pond, you can't help but be soothed by the imagery. I won't be visiting the water as much this summer, but I can think of it often when I look at this print.

The Underground Museum in Los Angeles
The art world can look like the rest of the world, an elitist club for old white dudes. Artist Noah Davis along with his wife Karon Davis, sought to turn that tired formula on its head by creating his own museum for his neighborhood community. Through a partnership with MOCA, Noah's artwork and countless other art world heavy hitters are accessible to the public for free. It's been closed due to COVID-19 but there are ways to support it until it re-opens, like donating or purchasing books and clothing from their online gift shop. To read more about why this is one of my favorite places in Los Angeles, see my full blog post here.
COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY IN BEAUTY STANDARDS
As a person and the owner of a brand I am deeply committed to supporting an inclusive view of beauty. I will continue to use models of every ethnicity, size and age and partner with influencers and bloggers of diverse backgrounds. Since I was a little girl I have been sensitive to this issue as having auburn hair and a very freckled complexion I didn't see many girls that looked like me held up as a beauty standard and still don't. I understand that when you don't see your image reflected in media you feel like you don't belong. I have never been thin, have been called fire crotch and Casper (the friendly ghost) more times than I would care to admit and repeatedly been on the receiving end of unsolicited advice for how to get rid of my freckles by whitening my skin or conversely how to tan because I am so pale. I never liked my skin growing up with all it's randomized polka dots all over, I longed for a uniform smooth complexion and a deep golden tan. Neither of which will ever be possible for me. I understand that this is not the equivalent of deeply ingrained racism that black people experience every day. It didn't prevent me from getting a job or put my life in danger. It did help me understand how being constantly reminded how you're different can make you feel uncomfortable and less than. I want to be an active part of making every type of women feel as beautiful and powerful as they innately are.

Paola Mathé is a blogger, creative director and entrepreneur with her own line of head wraps called Fanm Djanm which means strong woman in her native Haitian kreyol. I love bright colors and gravitate to Paola's bold stunning visuals that she creates. She has a flair for the dramatic which showcases her love of fashion and accessories.
Cacsmy Brutus (Mama Cax) in Janna Conner Pink Larrimore Earrings
Cacsmy Brutus was a Haitian-American blogger, advocate, motivational speaker and model. She was a cancer survivor and used her platform to challenge what the image of what people with disabilities should be or look like. As a teen she was diagnosed with bone and lung cancer. After her body rejected her hip replacement, the decision was made to amputate her right leg. She used her prominence to inspire other amputees, instead of covering up, she drew attention by dressing up her prosthetic leg. Cacsmy promoted body appreciation for people with disabilities and scars, for women that didn't see themselves as beautiful or their bodies celebrated.
Sadly, Cacsmy passed away last December at the age of 30. She had so much left to do and so much joie de vivre, traveling the world and living life to the fullest. She died young but lived more than most do in twice as much time. She will be missed.

Ludo Lefebvre Boursin Omelette Bon Appétit
My favorite brunch recipe is this Boursin Omelette by Ludo Lefebvre at his restaurant Petit Trois here in LA. There are two locations and both are very small and intimate spaces so not sure how they are going to re-open as socially distanced. One of the best parts is sitting at the counter at the Hollywood location and seeing the chefs cooking. Since I won't be able to go there anytime soon, I've attempted to re-create this at home. Serve with a crusty baguette with french butter and a simple green salad, delicious! Don't get hung up on it being perfectly folded over because it tastes just as good even if it's looks a hot mess. For Mother's Day, my husband made it for me the fancy way and it was delicious but I've made it a few times since then and just crumbled the Boursin in my scrambled eggs with a bit of butter in the pan and it was pretty good too (and a lot faster). So save the fancy presentation for the weekend when you might have a bit more time and energy!
Birkenstock Arizona in Earth Red Suede
Since I've been spending A LOT of time indoors wearing my Birkenstocks I decided to treat myself to a new pair. I only wear them inside because they make my feet look like boats but I'm going to try out the narrow size this time around which I just realized they have!
I buy a pair of Izipizi sunglasses every summer when I'm in France. I love their fun whimsical colors and their lightweight feel. They're inexpensive so I don't have to feel guilty when I treat myself! This is the color way I chose this summer, it's the perfect coral-ly pink. I think you can tell I'm into this color since the Birkenstocks I chose above are very similar!
Janna Conner Petite Starburst Stacking Ring and Twyla Gold Dome Ring
I had these nails art stickers laying around and thought quarantine was a good time to try them. Since I'm doing so much cleaning, there's not enough time for nail polish to dry properly and remain chip free. I love to look at nail art, just see my Pinterest board here. With Covid concerns I honestly don't see myself visiting a nail salon anytime soon. I have always been a DIY kind of gal anyways, but for whatever reason lately can't bring myself to do nail art with my brushes and sponges, I blame homeschooling 😂 These are kind of genius for a lazy girl's hack to nail art. And since they're stickers, they are already dry!
To apply: make sure nail beds are completed clean and dry, I rub with a little bit of alcohol or polish remover to make sure there are no residual oils that would interfere with adhesion. Then select the gel strip that best fits each nail and start at base and smooth out to the tip and out. Hold your nail file vertically and swipe down from nail edge to remove excess. Apply top coat to seal and to create a more realistic polish like shine.
I've had mine on for a week already, and they're holding up pretty well. There are a few chips and the edges have worn a bit but I think I could probably go a few days longer. I used Lily and Fox but it seems they are sold out. A similar company Dashing Diva has some nice designs like this. And also like the Scratch nail strips available at ULTA.
What has been bringing you joy these past weeks? Tell me in the comments below!
]]>I've rounded up some of my current favorite things that remind me that Spring is here!
Target Wild Fable Lavender Jumpsuit
I'll be wearing this come Sunday. I do love pastels and I thought it was a fresh take on the classic boiler suit. It's super comfortable and roomy, perfect for lounging around at home. Looks way more expensive than it's $35 price tag!
Maybelline Lemonade Craze Eye Shadow Palette
I have a lot of eye shadow palettes but I've been finding myself reaching for this one lately. It's a subtle take on bright citrus colors so it's festive but doesn't feel over the top when you are working from home.
Wondering how to use colored eyeshadow but find it too intimidating? Start small with little accents around your eye without committing to a full eyelid of color. I have deep set eyes so I often use a colored eyeliner or shadow just on the bottom lash line to help open up the eye. If you have larger eyes, you can commit to a full eye contour. I like how in these two examples it shows how to combine matte with shimmer and to just use a bold swipe of shimmer on the bottom. Simple yet fresh.
Eszter Acrylic Statement Earrings
Janna Conner Ezster Earrings
Janna Conner Ezster Earrings
I love the marbleized look of my acrylic Eszter earrings and that despite their size, they have a lightweight feel. Pair them with a print blouse, crisp whites, pastels or greys and tans.
Tanya Gold Square Bangle Bracelet Set
Tanya Gold Bangle Bracelet Set, Kinsey Straw Bag
These sleek thin bangles are the perfect complement to feminine prints. Gold plated brass they are durable yet comfortable to wear.
I first bought this mixing set in college, I fell in love with the milky mint green color and it's retro feel. It brings me a little bit of the joy of Spring time every time I use it. Crate and Barrel is carrying this again online and love that they are American made. If we're feeling very motivated this weekend, I'll be using these glass bowls to make my grandmother's Easter Bunny cake.
Easter Bunny Cake Food and Wine
My grandmother always made this Easter Bunny cake every year. I remember thinking it was so elaborate and was surprised when as an adult read the recipe that it was actually 2 round 8" cakes, with one cut for the ears and bow. It's actually pretty simple. This version from Food and Wine is very similar to my grandmother's version. One key difference was that she always used thin licorice strips for the whiskers, which I've never been able to find very easily and gum drops for the eyes. There are endless ways to decorate this cake, the main requirement being that you like coconut of course!
Matte Pink Nails by Easy Nails
Matte Pink Negative Space Nail Art
I usually am into super shiny nails, (that's why I love gel after all) but these days matte feels fresh. I love these two takes on matte pink nails, one with a regular polish application and one with a rounded negative space design. Both look great on short nails (which right now is especially important with sanitation concerns) and are easy to pull off. I would do the second look with binder sticker circles if your a little shaky or freehand it if you're more confident.
My secret to getting matte to last longer is to use any nail polish (doesn't have to be matte) and apply a regular gel top coat ( I like Essie Gel top coat then after that sets apply a matte top coat on top ( I like Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Matte). That way your nails have a little bit extra security under that matte coat because they can tend to be a little thinner and not as resilient as a shiny top coat. Et voilà, matte nails that should last you the better part of a week!
Wishing you and your family a very Happy Easter / Passover / Ramadan everyone!

Valentines Day is here, here are my favorite assortment of Valentines themed accessories and activities. Enjoy!
New to my website, I've added these cute, affordable heart barrettes. I have very thick hair (the kind that breaks ponytail holders on the regular) and this fits in my hair and stays. I like to wear it in a half up, half down hairstyle. But would also be cute, with a side part and on the side in front.
A whimsical spin on the huggie hoop style, these take ruby red crystals and punch it up a notch. Pair with a red lip and dazzle!
Let your hands do the talking with this crystal encrusted heart shaped stunner. Subtle enough to wear everyday!
Ruby Quartz Rose Cut 14k Gold fill Ring
Red and Navy Marlan Scarf Carrie gold cuff 14k Gold Leora Ring Statement Ring
My Marlan scarf is a great way to add a little pop of red to any ensemble! Work appropriate with a little bit of preppy flair to take any look from blah to polished.
Marlan Leopard Heart Print Scarf
Love this neutral take on a heart print. It looks like an animal print but it's actually hearts!
I love me some nail art but no matter how hard I try, I can't get my nails to grow that long. I"m just too active with my hands to have long nails. I used to be a nail biter as a child and old habits die hard, with biting being replaced with peeling my nail polish off when it chips. One of the worst things to do to your nails and yet I still do it. Attempts at regular applications of cuticle oil and taking collagen in my daily coffee does little to offset the damage. My nails are just weak and soft. So, despite my best efforts, short nails are the way for me. I like how the graphic design is simple to diy and is chic and minimal. For more valentine's nailspo, check out my Pinterest board for all things Valentines.

An easy and festive Valentines drink is to drop some raspberries in champagne flutes and if you are feeling extra, add a dash of Chambord liquor for a Kir Royale.
I love me some pizza and pepperoni just might be my fave. Love the high - low contrast of serving champagne with pizza - made valentines day appropriate in a heart shape for the dough and the pepperonis!
What we usually do for Valentines Day is have cheese fondue. It's so easy to do and so decadent. Our son who can be an incredibly picky eater has even taken to it recently. Our tried and true Bodum pot recently broke after 15 yrs so it might be time to upgrade to this chic copper version from Boska. Our favorite accoutrements are sliced mushrooms, red peppers, granny smith apples, cherry tomatoes and of course baguette!
How do you celebrate Valentines Day? Tell me in the comments below!
What
]]>I just love holidays, decorating for them and making the home look festive. Much to my husband's chagrin, I'm that person who on October 1st already has the decorations out. It's not his fault, he grew up in France where they don't celebrate Halloween. So while he is always asking Why?....I answer why not? At least our son enjoys them as much as I do so now it's two against one 😝
Halloween Charcuterie Board by How We Live
Find a festive fabric and drape across your table and then add a skeleton hand and scatter plastic spiders throughout your charcuterie board. Make sure to use seasonal ingredients like figs, carrots, apples, beets to get a lot of fall color on your board.
Prosciutto and cold cuts skull
I saw this prosciutto draped skull at a halloween party I went to last year. So clever and so easy!
Black Widow Cocktail is an easy punch made out of blackberries and vodka. I love a festive drink but don't love anything that involves food coloring or something that's going to stain my teeth. Love that this is festive while still employing natural not artificial flavors.
Take a plastic glove and fill it up with water and then freeze it. Cut off the bag et voilà, a frozen dismembered hand to keep your punch cool!
Black Velvet Cupcakes by Sugar and Charm
I'm making these Black Velvet cupcakes for a Halloween party I'm going to. I have a ton of googly eyes and think this is such a cute and tasty way to use them up. This recipe does use black food coloring which I"m on the fence about. I think they would still be cute with chocolate or white cream cheese frosting.
Love this healthy Halloween snack idea. Halving bananas and adding mini chocolate chip eyes and clementines peeled with celery stems.
As much as I try to be healthy, I'm often (mostly) out voted by my son who like all other kids loves sugary drinks and candy. If you go that route, this is a pretty cute way to do it. Love the use of the skeleton to showcase the sweets.
Layered Candy Corn Punch by Easy Peazy Mealz
Now admittedly candy corn candy is gross, but it looks cool and is a Halloween standard. My son loves it so I think he would enjoy this take on a candy corn punch. Begin with layering the drink with the heaviest sugar content on the bottom, and layer up from there to the lightest sugar content. For example, orange soda, then yellow Gatorade and then lastly, a flavored sparkling water. Be careful when pouring them so that they don't mix. An easy way to do that is by adding lots of crushed ice in the beginning and pouring in the drink layers from the side to keep the ice from getting saturated with color.
Wanna go a more natural route? Try experimenting with blood orange Italian soda and lemonade or orangina. Even if you do go the traditional soda route, I doubt it's the worst thing that the kids are going to eat, it's Halloween after all and sometimes you just gotta live a little!
Love, love, love a no carve pumpkin idea and this couldn't be easier with wrapping string around the pumpkin and adding a spider. I will even venture to say that these involve ingredients that just about every household already has so no need to purchase new stuff for just one project. After halloween you can remove the string and repurpose the pumpkins for Thanksgiving decor.
While I like the no carve idea, my son prefers carving so we end up doing it anyways. One trick my mom taught me is to put the carved pumpkin overnight in the fridge and remove it just for when it's in use and then back in the fridge. It helps to slow down the decomposition. I'd say you can get close to a week out of it this way. Another tip I came across is to douse the carved pumpkin in a 1 tsp bleach to 1 gallon water mix and let dry upside down. Spritz with 2 tbsp vinegar, 1 tsp lemon juice, and 1 quart water solution to keep it going.
This is a chic take on the melted crayon technique. You can paint the pumpkin first or choose a white pumpkin and then drip paint on the top and let it fan it's way down over the sides. Could even go goth and scary and do a dripping blood one. The possibilities are endless!
This is a painted no carve pumpkin I made. I stamped on a leaf pattern and then free painted it in. Looks cute but took forever. I must admit I enjoyed doing it though. So if you are like me and love painting mindlessly while listening to music or watching tv, this craft is for you!
This seasonally appropriate mani looks chic and festive with the matte polish and is an easy diy nail art. Paint your nails a crimson red and then using a makeup wedge sponge paint on a darker red and then black at the tip and dab over red polish from halfway down. Then seal with clear matte top coat. You can do this in any dark color combo - or if you're a Halloween purist you could do a yellow, orange and white candy corn inspired take on the ombre gradient manicure.
DIY Halloween Nail Art
I really enjoy a clean minimal take on nail art. This way it's cute and festive without being too over the top. I am a 43 year old woman after all and don't want to look like some crazy Halloween lady... Just someone who enjoys a holiday with good taste!
For this easy diy nail art, paint nails black, leaving index finger with just base coat. Then use either tip of white brush to paint googly eye bottoms and ghost or use Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in White and then draw the black eyes on top of them with Sally Hansen Nail Art pen in Black. I find the nail art pen is easier to control than using a brush.
I'm not always into figuring out a costume but I do love makeup and so will often go that route. I like that this is pretty while still festive. Just make a dramatic smoky eye, extreme fake eyelashes and then draw out the spider web using a creamy or gel eyeliner or finely sharpened black eyeliner.
Here's a literal yet minimal interpretation of classic Halloween colors. Do a cat eye winged liner on the top and then using powder underneath draw in a bright orange under eye. Using an eyeliner, don't forget to use it on your water line to make your eyes really stand out!
How about you? Are you a halloween mani wearing maximalist or a I'll keep my decor to my home kind of person? Let me know in the comments below!

Opals come in lots of different colors like orange, blue, white, pink, black and brown. There are two kinds of opals: precious, which shows flashes of iridescence and potch which are more common and often opaque, showing no iridescence. The iridescence of precious opals is the result of the arrangement of tiny silica spheres within the stone and how they refract light. The larger the spheres, the greater the range of colors.
Maelle Prong Set Opal Necklace
Australia has been the main producer of opals since the 19th century. Other mines include Czechoslovakia, Brazil, Mexico, USA and Southern Africa. It was believed that water, fire and heat are enclosed in opals so it is a remedy for many diseases. Opal helps against heart disease, calms nerves, guards against melancholy, and restores visual acuity. Because of the fiery appearance, it is a favorite stone of magicians and alchemists and has been the source of many superstitions.

Opalescence doesn't have to be relegated to your jewel box, they have made their way into fun makeup choices, furniture, decor and art. I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to opals and everything opalescent follow for more Inspo!

Women's V Neckline One Piece Swimsuit - Kona Sol
One-pieces used to be considered matronly but not anymore! Gone are the boring colors and basic necklines updated with one shoulder tops, contrasting color panels, neon and strappy backs. There are so many cute prints and colors that read young and hip and still keep you comfortable and covered up.
Aerie Layered One Piece Swimsuit
Aerie is a new find for me. I hadn't purchased anything from them before until I saw this bathing suit and was sold on the price and the print. I think this such an interesting design with the bandeau contrasting color top. Straps are adjustable to accommodate various body types. Get 20% off your purchase by clicking the Aerie links or images!
Aerie Strappy Back One Piece Swimsuit
I love neon anything so this was a match made in heaven for me. I purchased it in yellow and orange. I have a long torso so I love that Aerie offers longer versions of their swimsuits! Every time I've worn this bathing suit I've received compliments. I was at a pool party recently and then for the evening portion, threw on some jeans and presto, it's a cool summery bodysuit. I love it so much I just went back and bought it in navy and black!
Aerie Cutout One Shoulder One Piece Swimsuit
Aerie Perky Triangle Bikini Top
I'm really loving the trend of real bodies and real models on websites. It helps to give you a more accurate idea of what an item will really look like on you. Aerie, Target, JCrew and Madewell are a few mainstream brands that have started showing both standard model types and a few different plus sized models so you can really see the range from a size 2 to size 16. I love this bathing suit top because since my body type is pear shaped, I'm a bit smaller on top than bottom. This top runs on the small size - great for petite types and is so cute with the retro high waisted bikini bottom.
Aerie Pop Longline Scoop Bikini Top
Love this shorter tankini style for a sportier feel - great for swimming with kids or playing volleyball on the beach. You could even wear it as a sports bra and go for a hike!
Aerie Pique Tie Scoop Bikini Top
The piqué fabric with the polka dot print and the retro cut is so stylish!
One pieces are suddenly the chicest option out there. I love to pair mine with a full skirt, jean shorts or jeans long after the pool party ends et voilà a completely new look. The streamlined silhouette compliments a fuller skirt or pant, keeping a clean line. The fact that the bodysuit is made of stretch swimsuit material means it's more comfortable and suited to warmer temps - eliminating the need for a bra and keeping skin drier. Whether you are traveling far or just to the neighbor's pool, a time-saving, suitcase-streamlining style hacks is always a good idea!
I purchased all swimsuits myself and all opinions stated here are mine. This is not a sponsored post.
How about you? Would you wear a swimsuit as clothes? Let me know in the comments below!

Pride stands for the positive stance against discrimination and violence towards lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transsexual people. It promotes their self-affirmation, dignity, equal rights, increases their visibility as a social group, builds community, and celebrates sexual diversity and gender variance. Pride month was designated in June after lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning persons rioted following a 1969 police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar at 43 Christopher Street, in New York City. This riot and subsequent protests and rioting were the watershed moments and the impetus for organizing LGBT pride marches on a much larger public scale. LA's parade started soon after in 1970 and takes place in the city of West Hollywood every year.

This is a surprisingly wearable rainbow eye makeup look. Love that there is nothing else on the eye except a little highlighter in the inner corner, making the lashes the star of the show.

These makeup brushes have received great reviews and this cruelty free, set is only $20! At that price I couldn't resist treating myself!

I spotted my good friend Julia wearing these, raving about how comfortable they are. I walk a lot - gotta keep up my 10,000 steps a day! So comfort and style are key and it's often hard to find both. I like that unlike most flats they have a sturdy sole and a solid construction. Plus, they're ethically made in Peru so you can feel good about your purchase. Read more about it here.
I just bought the almond colored ones, and am excited to start breaking them in! I think they'll go perfectly with faded jeans and summer dresses. Get $25 off your purchase here.
Femi Raffia Handbag with Marlan Feather Print Scarf
I've been wearing this bag on repeat. It's the perfect size, roomy enough to fit your necessities and then some, and small enough to look chic and polished. It's neutral enough to go with everything!
Marlan Feather Scarf Maxence Pearl Hoop Earrings
I love tying a scarf on my purse and giving it a little extra flair. It's practical and versatile too, the other day I was caught in some inclement weather and I put the scarf around my neck and it helped to keep me warm. Or, if you don't have a hair tie but need to get your hair out of your face just tie it on like a headband, or loop it around your ponytail.
This straw clutch has been my evening go to. It's smaller size makes it a little dressy, but the material is casually summer. Perfect for LA's relaxed elegance.
Samira Pearl Gold Huggie Hoop Earrings
Huggies are hugely popular right now. They're called huggies, because they hug the earlobe. They're great because they click into place with a secure lever back and you can kind of forget you even have them on.
Samira Pearl Huggie Hoop Earrings
Big enough to make an impact but small enough to go with everything, my Samira pearl huggie hoops are the perfect earrings!
Ok, so now you've got your gifts, but where are you going to go? Mother's Day Brunch can be a bit hectic, restaurants are crowded and costly as usually it's a special menu. I say skip it and go to the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. I live very close to the Norton Simon and am a member here. I love to go and look at the stellar art collection - Picasso, Degas, Rodin, Matisse, Van Gogh, Goya, Brancusi, Rembrandt, just to name a few.
Sam Francis Basel Mural I 1956-1958
Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen. Bronze and silk sculpture by Degas
The grounds of the museum are beautiful with a lily pond fish and ducks sprinkled with reclining sculptures nestled among the garden.
The garden is a beautiful place to just sit and relax. There is a small Patina cafe where you can order a glass of wine or a meal. Sometimes, we come just to sit outside and have a snack. My son likes the cookies, I like the hummus with flatbread and their soups.
Ducks in the garden
Le Penseur (The Thinker ) by Auguste Rodin
My mom is a big Rodin fan, and if you can't make it to Paris to see his home (which is pretty incredible) this is the next best thing. I took her here last Mother's Day as she had never been here before. The Norton Simon has 11 of his bronzes on view! The bulk are on the exterior of the property at the entrance and on Colorado Boulevard.
Honoré de Balzac bronze by Rodin
The Norton Simon is never terribly crowded, and when it is it's typically on the monthly free night, the first Friday of every month. From the viewing galleries remodeled by Frank Gehry, the movie theater by Gensler, and the sculpture garden which was once a public park, the Norton Simon is truly a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Their current exhibition is Matisse /Odalisque, it's short so even the squirmiest of children can get through it quickly! On through June 17.
After seeing all that art, you might be in the mood for a sweet treat. I know I always am after visiting the museum. My favorite recipe as of late, (I've made it twice in the past week!) is White Bean Tahini Blondies by Pamela Salzman. My husband doesn't even like sweets and he loves it. I've been seeing a lot of Tahini baking recipes on Pinterest so I was curious to try one. I was unsure how it would taste as I've never had a bean brownie or blondie before. I have Pamela's cookbook Kitchen Matters, and I've made a few recipes from it and enjoyed all of them. It's gluten free and dairy free adaptable so can accommodate many palettes. I made it for my book club last week and it was a hit!
I love these because I can satisfy my sweet tooth while still feeling virtuous because they contain protein and healthy fats. The legumes and sesame tahini pureed into the batter, ensures the high protein, healthy fat content. Tahini is an amazing spread made entirely from sesame seeds. Besides being rich in protein and good fat, sesame seeds boast an impressive amount of calcium, about 88 milligrams in only one tablespoon! Beans, the other key ingredient, are incredibly nutrient dense and inexpensive. I listened to a Ted Talk on how beans are the the healthiest food you can eat. I like that this recipe gives me a new take on how to eat beans, beyond beans and rice or other savory options.
These ingredients are easy to find, I got all of them from my local Trader Joes. I substituted sweetened coconut for the unsweetened because that's what I had on hand and I think it adds a little extra oomph. I'm curious to try without next time. I also used regular semi-sweet chocolate chips because I don't have issues with dairy. Another possibility is to turn this into a light and fluffy cake by adding 1 tablespoon of coconut flour. Or if you aren't into Tahini, try substituting creamy almond butter.
Wishing everyone a very Happy Mother's Day, take time to relax and enjoy yourself!

Scarves hold a special place in my heart. The first gift my husband (then boyfriend) gave me was an Hermès neck scarf. At first I felt it was a little too dressy for my native California lifestyle. I began to experiment with it and found that it was actually extremely versatile.

Not into traditional Valentines looks, or not a girly girl? I love my black heart enamel choker necklace for a little bit of edge and whimsy. Makes a great gift for any galentine who's not into pink or red. Pairs well with black, navy, grey or even cream for a winter black and white look.
Social Paint Cosmetics Lipsticks
What's Valentines day without lipstick? I wear one of these lipsticks almost everyday. Love the versatile, soft blush nudes for day and the brighter pink shades for a night out. Sézane Joy Jumper Chevron Sweater in Pink Multicolor
The soft mauve and pink chevron print on this knit sweater has a slightly seventies feel but with a modern color palette and silhouette. Sézane is a brand that I fell in love with for it's unique and affordable Parisienne aesthetic on one of my annual trips to Paris. They now have a store in NYC so I don't have to wait to get my fix!
Love the delicate nature of these hoops. Thin and elegant, hand shaped wire makes these a modern take on the classic gold hoop earring.
Bena Raspberry Jade Bar Necklace Photo by Veronica Kablan.
Just can't get enough of this vibrant shade of raspberry. Makes for a great layering piece or on its own!
Madewell Harper Mule in Pink Suede
I personally own two pairs of the Harper mules. One in black and the pink suede color above that on my pale skin wears like a nude. I have flat feet that often ache and hurt when I wear any kind of heels so I had long ago resigned myself to a life of flat sensible shoes. Enter the Harper mule. Its stacked chunky heel and padded insoles are cushy and comfy. I have worn them at all day long trade shows when I'm on my feet and have no time to sit or change my shoes. And to sweeten the deal, these pink suede ones are currently on sale!!
Fun fashion ring, I like to wear with a bunch of different rings, one on each finger!
Shown: 14k Heart Ring, Sidwell Stacking Rings, 14k Diamond Petite Starburst Ring, 14k d initial bracelet, 14k Diamond Starburst Bracelet and coming soon 14K X Pinky Ring
If you're the type that doesn't change up your rings on the daily then these beauties are for you. Thin and delicate, you can put them on and forget about them. One on each finger elevates the look to something a little edgier and unexpected. Pair it with a valentine inspired cherry red half moon mani for some easy diy nail art that is chic but not over the top.

Art Deco inspired gold starburst statement earrings provide a maximal statement.
Xandie Shoulder Duster Long Earrings. Photo by Veronica Kablan
Extra long in length but remarkably light, my Xandie shoulder dusters pair well with a tee or a ball gown. Tip: if you are new to the extra long earring trend, wear your hair down for a more subdued look, up for more impact.

Sami Weaver in my Crystal Marquis Fringe Ear Jacket Earrings
I love a dress it up, dress it down moment. Sami Weaver shows how to pair a simple graphic tee with a major earring!
And what will I be wearing on New Year's Eve? This gunmetal metallic dress by Zara. I love that it's pairs the luxe look of lamé with a more sedate knee length. I've worn this to two holiday parties already this month and received more compliments than I have on more expensive dresses! It can be worn both with the crossover in the front or the back, so it's two looks in one. And lucky you, it's on sale now! Click here
Millicent Earrings in Matte Black
Lamé is already a lot of look so I paired it with something a little more subdued. I love the matte black with the shine of the gold disc when paired with a dramatic fabric choice. Definitely not your expected party earring!
Happy New Year! Wishing everyone a safe and festive celebration with friends and family! See you next year!
]]>Peg Acrylic Statement Earrings in Grey
Acrylic is such a fun material to work with! It's slick, glossy surface give a sophisticated shine and I love the marbled finish. Great for everyday wear and casual outfits, you'll never look overdressed.

Larrimore Acrylic Earrings in Blush
Pastels are surprisingly still relevant for cooler days, looking very chic with textured coats and sweaters. My Larrimore earrings are oversized but in soft blush tones they are chic, not overpowering. Because acrylic is lightweight, you can wear these large earrings from desk to dinner and beyond.

Janelline Mismatched Asymmetrical Flower Hoop Earrings
The asymmetry of these hoops, updates a classic earring style and makes it modern and fresh. Looks equally great paired with a flowy, romantic print maxi dress as it does a crisp double breasted blazer.

]]>Red Zadie Sandals Who What Wear micro suede available at Target. Not a fan of red? They also come in light blue and blush! Essie Fifth Avenue toenail polish is the perfect orangey red.
Universal Thread Teala laser cut lace up sneaker espadrille at Target. Some days you don't want to wear socks and sneakers but you don't want to wear a heel either. I Iove these because the perforated holes create great ventilation and because they're lace ups they stay on your feet for running around. I also like that they're nude so very versatile. Frame Denim jeans, Illesteva Leonard sunglasses and Old Navy Hat.
Legend of Lido tote bag, perfect for carrying everything you need for the day! Washable nylon interior means you can easily keep it clean.
Universal Thread Meena Slip On Sneakers I love these sneakers! I'm always mashing down the back of my sneakers shoes so these are the perfect slip on and go. I"ve paired them with exercise pants or jeans for a more interesting than the usual Stan Smith look.
Huge trend for Spring/Summer is mismatched earrings. They're easier to wear than you might think! Janelline flower hoop earrings by Janna Conner
When you mix and match earrings, always pick complementary tones and if you have multiple piercings on one ear, put the larger earring on that ear and the simpler earring on the ear with fewer pierces. I typically wear a double pierce and 2 ear cuffs daily on one side and one earring on the other. I like the way that the one simpler side balances the busier one. That way the eye gets a little relief and it's not sensory overload.
A New Day Red Crossband Quilted Mule Sandal. I like shoes that I can wear from day to night, and with a lower 2.5" block heel I can wear these for hours! These remind me of a Gucci style that I admired for years but they had really high heels so this version is infinitely more wearable. Now I have to admit inexpensive shoes can often be uncomfortable but I've had a lot of success with Target and Zara.
Laine coral beaded hoops by Janna Conner. I"ve been really into metals for the past season so it's fun to mix in a few bright colors back into the mix. With all the dreary news that we are bombarded with on a daily basis, I find my eye gravitating towards bright happy colors. I especially love the rainbow beaded version, it reminds me of African trade beads and visiting outdoor flea market stalls at the Porte de Clignancourt in Paris.
Sometimes you don't feel like wearing big earrings though. For those days, my Cathal circle necklaces is a minimal touch. There's also a matching earring and it's available in yellow gold or rose gold plate.
These look much more expensive than they are, they remind me of woven French bistro chairs. I love that they're black with tan accents on the white so they really go with everything. And if you're not into patterns, they're also available in solid black and caramel brown. Woven mules by Universal Thread
As much as I love color, I love metallics. I typically gravitate towards gold but decided to go mix it up with these silver Junebug mule slippers by A New Day. They remind me of a much more expensive Jenni Kayne version I own, reminiscent of a Moroccan Berber slipper. However, these are so much more comfortable. They have a bit of elastic flex on the side so they expand and contract with the foot.
I purchased all these items myself, and all opinions stated are mine!

The Oscars are this Sunday...will you be watching? I love movies and fashion so it's the perfect combination of eye candy and voyeurism. The best part is the red carpet before it actually starts, when you can admire the glitz and glamour before the hours long the ceremony begins. I think the only nominee I've seen this year is Get Out which should absolutely win for best screenplay.
If I was a nominee I would aspire to wear one of the many beautiful gowns showcased at the recent Spring Haute Couture week that just graced the runways in Paris last month.
Giambattista Valli Spring 2018 Couture
I just love the chartreuse color of this dress, and pair it with strawberry blonde hair, perfection! I would pair them with my turquoise and lapis earrings below for a complementary color contrast.
One of a Kind Janna Conner Cubist Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Lapis Diamond Pavé Earrings
I only made one of these babies, out of the finest rose cut sleeping beauty turquoise and slices of lapis. They're light weight dangles, because one of the number one complaints I hear from women are that they're ear holes are too low and they can't wear anything heavy. Besides, who wants to wear heavy earrings?! They're secure because they're lever backs, and pavéd with conflict free diamonds for extra sparkle.
Givenchy Spring 18 Couture Ombré dress
I love the ombré gradient of this maxi dress. The fabric is so light and dreamy, one can just imagine it swishing on the red carpet.
Janna Conner Chrysoprase Lapis and Turquoise Cubist rings
Chrysoprase is a beautiful jade green like stone most often found in Australia. I love it's milky vibrant hue that is so unlike any other stone. I would pair my chrysoprase and diamond pavé drops and a cocktail ring with this dress choice, since it's got a lot going on it's best to keep the jewelry a little on the simpler side.
Janna Conner Cubist Chrysoprase and Diamond Pavé Earrings
Or if you're not a fan of color and want to go a little more traditional glam, I would wear this Givenchy gunmetal tiered gown. I love gunmetal because you get the beauty of metallic but it's a little less bright and shiny and a little more sophisticated.
Givenchy Spring 18 Couture Gunmetal Tiered Maxi Dress
Since the dress is very soft and feminine, I would toughen it up a bit with some hardware elements. I love the sculptural feel of my Edie earrings and they have a bit of an oxidized finish to them so they'll pair well with gunmetal.
]]>These studs are simple and sweet and they highlight one of my favorite jewelry trends, mismatched earrings. I almost never wear a matched pair of earrings, preferring to instead select different ones that look good together. Either thematically, color-wise or scale.

Janna Conner Garnet Rose Gold Berget Locket Necklace
I created this necklace to have a sentimental sort of feeling to it. It can accommodate your or your loved one's birthstone to commemorate special occasions. In this case, I put rose-cut garnets together with rose gold.
I am a big fan of K-Beauty. I regularly use sheet masks, essence, serums and the like. I recently bought myself this sleeping mask and love it. It smells amazing, and I love that it can be used for a 10 minute quickie version on days when I need a little extra oomph, because let's be honest being a working mom doesn't always make you feel or look like a supermodel.
Glow Recipe Watermelon Sleeping Mask
With all the fondue and chocolate, I'm going to want to be comfy. Well, when don't I want to be comfy? Um, never. So, I'll be wearing this cute JCrew Champagne sequin t shirt that not only I bought for myself, but my sister gifted me one as well. I guess I'm pretty predictable, eh?
What do I want to eat on Valentines day? Well, on any day if we're being honest....Chocolate! My husband Raf is Belgian so we spend a lot of time eating / talking about chocolate. My mother-in-law stuffs her carry-on with our favorite Côte d'Or bars - dark chocolate and marzipan for me, praliné for him. I'll never forget when handed a smores smothered with Hershey's chocolate shortly after his arrival in the US, how incredulous he was at how it could be called chocolate. He spat it out on the spot and refused to try anymore. Thankfully, this recipe has the opposite effect, even though Raf doesn't like dessert he always comes back for seconds of this one.
Opened in 1994, Gramercy Tavern, recipient of eight James Beard Awards, is a New York City culinary institution. This recipe will make you feel like a fancy chef using vanilla bean and brioche while still being fairly simple to execute. The most complicated step is tempering the milk and chocolate but that's really more time consuming than difficult. Anyways, this is the best thing ever, I dare you to make it and not eat the whole thing!
Gramercy Tavern Chocolate Bread Pudding
Makes one 9-by-13-inch pan
Unsalted butter for the pan
3 cups heavy cream
2 cups whole milk
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
4 large eggs
2 large egg yolks
4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, melted in a small bowl
2 ounces bittersweet chocolate pieces (about 1/3 cup)
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pound Brioche (recipe follows), crusts removed and cut into 3/4-inch cubes
2 ounces milk chocolate pieces (about 1/3 cup)
1 cup heavy cream, lightly whipped (optional)
Preheat the oven to 325°F, with a rack in the middle position. Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking pan.
In a large pot, combine the cream, 1 cup of the milk, and the sugar. Scrape the seeds from the vanilla bean into the pot, then toss in the bean. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, whisking until the sugar dissolves.
Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine the remaining 1 cup milk, the eggs, and yolks and whisk until smooth.
When the cream mixture boils, remove it from the heat and steadily whisk about a cup of the liquid into the egg mixture to temper it. Pour the egg mixture back into the pot, whisking constantly. Gradually whisk about a cup of the egg mixture into the bowl of melted chocolate, then pour the chocolate mixture back into the pot, whisking constantly. Whisk in the vanilla extract. Add the brioche to the pot and stir the chocolate mixture well to break up the bread. Let the mixture stand for about 30 minutes so the brioche can absorb the liquid.
Pour the brioche mixture into the buttered pan. Sprinkle the bittersweet and milk chocolate pieces on top. Bake the bread pudding until it’s just set, 45 to 55 minutes; when it is ready, the pudding will puff up. Let the pudding cool for about 15 minutes before serving. Serve with the whipped cream, if you like.

Located in an nondescript storefront on Washington blvd in the Arlington heights / West Adams neighborhood, you could easily drive by and miss it. The entrance is through the gift shop (insert Banksy joke here), which is a tasteful assortment of curated art books, t-shirts, home decor setting the tone for what's to come. Entrance is free, made possible through a partnership with MOCA, that has also loaned most of the collection on display in the exhibit.

The Underground Museum is a breath of fresh air. Walk in and exhale the stresses of the surrounding city. Art museums can be intimidating, sterile places. Not here. What so many places get wrong, especially in LA, they get right. The staff are warm, everyone is all smiles and seeming like they are genuinely want to be there - no too cool for school attitudes here. It was a really hot day when we were there, and they offered us water to drink as the juice bar had already closed for the day.

"Ultimately, I want to change the way people view art, the way people buy art, they way they make art. I've always tried to balance the tight rope of making my art accessible to those who are aware of the craft, and those who aren't convinced of art, or more specifically, my artistic objective. I believe the concealing too much in theory is problematic and that art can function in every-day life. I strive for an artistic legacy that not only transcends blackness but confluences and impacts all cultures " -Noah Davis
Reflecting on Noah Davis' painting in Artists of Color
How I make art more interactive for Dries. He takes pictures of things he finds interesting with his camera and we compare and discuss afterwards.
Sit down and share a moment with friends.
The museum was originally artist Noah Davis' studio, he began hosting art exhibitions there and gaining attention and acclaim and expanded into the surrounding buildings, creating an outdoor space and garden, all with the vision of creating the interactive experience that was to become the Underground Museum. Unfortunately Noah's life was cut short due to a rare form of cancer and passed away at age 32 in 2015. He was extremely prolific, planning 13 exhibitions with MOCA before his death, the current exhibition Artists of Color is the third. The museum and his legacy has continued on through the help of his family. His artist wife Karon, and brother video artist Khalil Joseph (director of Lemonade), carry on his legacy. Khalil also curates the summer movie series that hosts a different art or popular film every Friday night in the purple garden.
Movie night! We saw Get Out last summer, the place was packed but all were accommodated as we scrunched in together. Some on the floor sprawled on blankets, others on folding chairs. They handed out wine and popcorn. All gratis as it's put on in conjunction with the Film Foundation. Such a wonderful way to spend a summer evening, everyone under the stars enjoying a great film in a beautiful setting.
The purple garden is one of my favorite spots in the museum. It was built last and was Noah's final installation along with his father to create a calm, contemplative spot for the neighborhood to enjoy and rejuvenate itself. Having also lost friends to cancer at too young an age, I think its such a beautiful place to commemorate and memorialize. To be surrounded by lavender, jacaranda and wisteria in this urban garden and to be able to sit and reflect is so lovely. They have brightly colored parasols, you can use to shade yourself from the sun or find inspirational meaning from the quotes hanging from a nearby tree. His family must find so much solace to be able to come here and feel his presence and see how much joy it brings visitors. It's a place to commune, to reflect and to connect. The museum hosts weekly meditation and yoga sessions, and have readings and artist talks. All is not subdued though, they even hosted a block party at the end of December. See calendar here
