September Birthstone : Sapphire

September's birthstone is Sapphire (Corundum).  Never heard of Corundum? Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminum oxide with traces of iron, titanium and chromium.  Did you know that all gem quality corundum that is not red, is called sapphire, a word that originates from the Greek sappheiros. When corundum is red, it's a ruby!     Sapphire and diamond butterfly brooch by Joel A. These impurities are what give the corundum its color.
